What's this all about?
Why the site? What's it all about? What's it meant to do/be?
Well, the idea was planted when I first went to university, and met up with a
couple of guys, Alex Goggs and Walter Bidet (names have
been changed to protect the
guilty
innocent). They had set up a little chart, so they could mark their progress
through university life. Now this chart didn't consider their academic prowess,
nor did it consider their achievements on the sporting field. No, this chart
was to do with the third pillar of university life, the socialising that one
partakes in at university.
Whilst my recollections about details are a little hazy, the chart
listed the various activities that the guys would be rewarded points for - if I
recall correctly getting drunk earned them 15 points, whilst a snog would earn
them 25. There were other activities listed, including doing the yard and
various intimate acts with members of the opposite sex. The winner, at the end
of the autumn term, was to be bought a pint by the loser.
As the first term progressed Walter, with the aid of a short term
girlfriend, managed to open up a bit of a lead over Alex, and by mid November
it looked like it was all over bar the shouting. But Alex was not one for
giving up easily, and with the downing of several yards of ale he was able to
keep in touch. But even with this effort his cause looked doomed, until one of
the last evenings of the term and the hall of residence's Christmas Disco.
It was an evening of incredible events as Alex stormed back and overtook
what had looked like Walter's unassailable position. As Alex wandered
around the dance floor with misletoe in hand Walter made the fatal
error of getting involved with one girl, leaving Alex to rack up points
almost at will. The evening, the term, and the pint were his!
~oOo~
At the time, the charting was done using very simple techonology -
a piece (well, actually several in the end) of graph paper, and two different
coloured pencils. However, with the onset of technology it seems appropriate to
have a website for people to record their own pub-olympics charts.
So, this site has been created. There is a site tour, but in a nutshell you set up a game in
which you set up what activities you are going to score points for, and then
when you carry out one of these activites you record it by adding an action.
The website will plot out various charts for you, and then at then end of the
period of the game you will be emailed
certificates detailing who you've done. You can add evidence of what
you've been up to, and there are also message boards so you can indulge in a
bit of banter.
